Perfect start for Biniam Girmay at the Giro d´Italia

It was only his Grand Tour debut this Friday, but Biniam Girmay conquered the white jersey as best young rider by taking second place in the opening stage of the Tour of Italy, defeated by only Mathieu Van der Poel. Two days later the third stage ended in an expected bunch sprint along Lake Balaton. Biniam Girmay took fourth place at the end of the stage of 201 kilometer.

Thanks to his second place in the opening stage to Visegrád, Biniam Girmay appeared on the start podium of the 9.2 kilometer individual time trial through the streets of Budapest with the distinctive jersey on his shoulders. For the first time, a rider of Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux rode a Grand Tour stage with the best young rider’s jersey on his shoulders.

Thanks to his second place in the points classification behind pink jersey Mathieu van der Poel, the Eritrean rider wore the ciclamino jersey and lined up to the start of the third stage with a third different jersey in three days.

His teammates guided him to the front in the approach to the final kilometer, after which he battled with the best sprinters. Although Girmay was boxed in, he finished fourth.
