It'd be true to say that triathlon racing runs through Frederic Funk's veins, given that both his parents were also professional triathletes. It's a fact that also helps explain why he completed his first ever triathlon aged just five, going on to race short distance in youth and junior categories. In his final year as a junior he finished as German Champion, and qualified for the World Championships.
As his experience grew, so did his awareness of his strengths. He began to realise that his power on the bike gave him an advantage in non-drafting races, so in 2018 he focussed on middle distance 70.3 Ironman events. It was a good move, netting him four podium finishes in his first year as a pro athlete.
He continued to build on this early success, racking up a string of podium finishes and several wins over the next few years, culminating in a 2nd place at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Lathi, Finland. Frederic made his long distance debut in 2025, and it turned out to be a good year – at Challenge Roth he netted a 5th place, and he also came home with a podium at Ironman Switzerland.
The return to Roth was symbolic, because it was where he first raced as a child. He said of this race, "there was no question in my mind that my first long-distance triathlon would take place in Roth..."
