Omloop het Nieuwsblad: Aimé De Gendt (20th) among the favorites in the final

The Omloop Het Nieuwsblad (1.UWT, 29/01) was mainly spared of the predicted storm. However, the rain showers added an extra difficulty to the Belgian opening race

A five man breakaway created a gap during the first race kilometers. Behind, there was a tough battle, splitting the reduced bunch often in several groups. Finally, eight leaders approached the final with the duo Muur van Geraardsbergen and Bosberg, with Aimé De Gendt and Boy van Poppel fighting in the chasing peloton. Jasper Stuyven won the classic by defeating his compatriot Yves Lampaert in a sprint. Aimé De Gendt finished 18th in a group sprinting for 4th place.

Aimé De Gendt:
« I was hoping to finish in the top 10. On the Muur in Geraardsbergen we escaped with eight riders behind, but the chase behind the leaders wasn’t smooth because of team tactics. I tried on my own on the Bosberg, but it was still 10 kilometer to go. I planned a last attack in the final straight, but the pace of our group was too high. I performed well thanks to the help of Pieter Vanspeybrouck and Boy van Poppel. Last year I finished 2nd in Le Samyn, so I hope to use my good form for a good result next Tuesday as well. »
