JONAS SCHOMBURG

Jonas Schomburg is a familiar face on the triathlon scene. As a sprint- and Olympic-distance specialist, he follows in the footsteps of his father Arnd, himself a former professional triathlete who competed for Germany in the 1990s. Jonas made his international triathlon début in 2013, achieving his career-best results to date in the 2016 season. On top of winning the Aquathlon (U23) World Championship title in the Olympic season, he took silver at the World University Triathlon Championships and finished a personal best of seventh in the ITU World Triathlon Series. After a couple of years competing for Turkey, German-born Schomburg returned to racing for Germany in 2018. He is also on the German Triathlon Union's talent squad for the next Olympic Games.

A 10th-place finish at the Olympic Test Event in Tokyo secured 27-year-old Jonas his spot at the Tokyo Olympic Games, bringing him a big step closer to fulfilling his dream of winning an Olympic medal.

About Jonas

What music do you use to motivate yourself in the last 30 minutes before a race?

Loads of different stuff, but Stronger by The Score and Rude Boy by Dub Inc. are usually in there somewhere.

What is your training must-have?

My training squad in Grenoble. I get to ride with some of the best in the world every day. Sure, it can be super challenging but we support each other and have become really great friends.

How many hours per week do you spend on the bike and what's your favourite training session?

I do around 14 hours a week on the bike. My favourites are 5-hour-long exploration rides and tough brick workouts.

How do you recover after a long day of training?

Good food and plenty of sleep.

What do you do when not swimming, cycling or running?

I actually hang out a lot with my training squad off the bike too. We cook together and go hiking in the snow or sometimes we go climbing. I'm also really into water sports so I love going to the beach in the off-season.

What is your biggest strength?

I believe in myself and my abilities.

What is important to you?

Trust, fairness, positive thinking and taking care of yourself, others and the environment.

What’s your life motto?

Big gear, no fear!
