Tour de France stage 21: Wanty-Groupe Gobert complete on Champs Elysées

The Tourpeloton rode from Montgeron on Sunday to the traditional arrival at the Champs Elysees in Paris in the final stage of the Tour of France.

Dion Smith was part of a breakaway of nine riders on the local laps in Paris. At 10 kilometers from the finish the breakaway was caught and thus allowed the top sprinters to fight for the win one last time. Dylan Groenewegen was the fastest, Pieter Vanspeybrouck finished 13th. In the final classification Guillaume Martin occupies a 23rd place. Thomas Degand ends 34th, Marco Minnaard 40th. Wanty-Group Gobert started three weeks ago with 9 debutants Düsseldorf. All nine riders reached the finish line in Paris after three tough weeks.

Hilaire Van der Schueren:

"A happy feeling prevails. This morning, I even felt emotional during the team discussion. I spoke so much to the boys. In the last week they felt I was right."

"The two goals we had in mind, riding in front and reaching Paris with nine riders, have been accomplished. For a team like ours, that is the most achievable. We might have put the cherry on the cake with a stage victory, but then the peloton had to ride differently."

"I had this selection in my head in Tour de Romandie. After the Dauphiné, I knew we would not hit a crazy figure here. We have very good riders with a motor to ride a Grand Tour. We can still improve in sprinting and climbing. We will worki on that."

"To Xandro Meurisse I said in Romandie: Wait another year, then you will be here. I hope he can make progress and then he'll be here next year, if we are invited again."
