Team Wanty-Groupe Gobert - World Championships Innsbruck

Meurisse and Eiking satisfied

The World Championships in Innsbruck (Austria) presented a tough course in the heart of the Alps. Dion Smith left the race after four hard hours of racing, on a course that did not suit his characteristics. Xandro Meurisse rode a solid race and was able to protect his leaders deep into the final. Odd Eiking provided the best WGG result and could stay with the strongest in the race for a very long time. In the end Eiking and Meurisse finished 30th and 42th.

Odd Eiking:

"I did not have an excellent feeling in the beginning of the race. Still I was able to get the best possible result. The start of the race was relatively quiet and a breakaway quickly build up a big lead. This meant that the peloton had to chase hard to catch the breakaway. That made the race hard. I came here for a top 20 result, so I can not be disappointed with 30th given my legs. »

Xandro Meurisse:

"My first World Championships were a special experience. I really enjoyed the first ascent on the local circuit, with all the people on the side. Also on the sportive side this day was a success. I can not be dissatisfied. Normally I had to make the race hard, but due to the changed race situation my role changed. I protected Dylan and Tim for a long time. I have given everything for my leaders and I think the team is satisfied."

"I hope to taste the World Championships again in the upcoming years. Also the course in Yorkshire next year should suit me. But first I will have to perform again throughout the year. I end this year with kermesse races in Vollezele and Oostrozebeke before I ride Paris-Tours on Sunday. The team had a good year, in which we have further evolved. Also personally this year was a success, with my first European championships, the birth of my son and now these World Championships!"
