Napolitano sprints to 1st 2017 podium spot in strong sprinters field

Danilo Napolitano sprinted to his first 2017 podium spot in the opening stage of Tour du Poitou-Charentes (2.1, 22-25/08). Five riders started a breakaway in the beginning of the stage and got a maximum advantage of more than 4 minutes. With 25 kilometers to go they were caught by the chasing pack. The peloton headed for an expected bunch sprint. A crash in the final caused some splits, but the riders could sprint for victory in Saintes. Elia Viviani showed his fast legs. He won the sprint before Nacer Bouhanni and our Danilo Napolitano. A well deserved podium spot for our 36 year old Italian rider after top 10 sprint finishes in the past Tour de l'Ain and Tour du Limousin.

Danilo Napolitano:

"In the first place I want to thank my teammates and sports director Jean-Marc Rossignon. We rode in the first positions of the peloton the whole day. In the final I followed the train of Team Sky and thus I was able to take 3rd place. The condition is good and I am happy with this result. I hope we can bring the team a win this week! It is important for me to wear number 108 as a tribute to Wouter Weylandt, who passed away in the Giro d'Italia in 2011."
