Brussels Cycling Classic - Kenny Dehaes close to podium

On Saturday Kenny Dehaes finished very close to the podium in Brussels Cycling Classic (1.HC, 02/09).

With sixty kilometers to go the battle started when a group of ten riders accelerated behind the leading group. A group of 15 riders was formed in front. Wanty-Groupe Gobert took its responsability in the peloton and just before la flamme rouge the last survivor Mathias Brändle was caught. Arnaud Démare was the fastest in Brussels, Kenny Dehaes sprinted to 4th place.

Kenny Dehaes:

"I am disappointed. Before the race I aimed for a podium spot and I secretly dreamed of victory. I know the final 20 kilometers by heart. No corner or stone is a secret for me. I finish for the second time fourth in this race. That isn't bad considering the riders who finish before me, but I still hoped to do better. The team worked for me all day. We weren't present in the big front group, but we chased as a WorldTour team. When Brändle was caught it was chaos."

"Only Napo was present for our team since the others had chased hard. He had to bring me from far, which wasn't bad considering the headwind. With 200 meters to go I passed a lot of riders and got in the wheel of Stuyven. Unfortunately I had to slow down because I was caught behind him. Otherwise I would have been in the wheel of Démare, able to sprint to 2nd or 3rd spot. I could have obtained a better result than 4th."

"This race was very important for me. We will see how the legs are recovered tomorrow in Fourmies. I will now focus on the Belgian Cycling Cup in which I am still in the lead."
Hilaire Van der Schueren (sports director):

"We only made one mistake: when the group of fifteen riders accelerated we should have had one rider with them. But they attacked when no one thought of it! After that Kittel was dropped and we had to wait for the reaction of the other teams. Sunweb also had to chase and that is why we started working with them. It is a pity we miss a podium spot so closely. We would have deserved one! Everybody did a good job."

"This result in a .HC race is important for our Europe Tour classification. Tomorrow we count on the fresh legs of Backaert and Dhaene in GP de Fourmies."
