Tour de France stage 13: Guillaume Martin into top 20 after explosive mountain stage

After a long Pyrenees stage on Thursday the riders in Tour de France had a short, but tough mountain stage on the program on Friday. Andrea Pasqualon tried to join the breakaway in the beginning of the stage.

On the mountain slopes the pace was however very high and the favorites started accelerating early. Guillaume Martin rode an intelligent stage. On Col d'Agnes Martin was dropped but was able to return with the favorites at the summit. On Mur de Péguère Martin rode its own pace to the top. Our 24 year old French rider finished 19th in Foix. Because of that he enters the top 20 in the GC with a 19th spot. Thomas Degand finished 35th and is now 32nd in the GC.

Guillaume Martin:

"I was afraid of this short stage, because in Dauphiné I had a difficult day in a similar stage with a fast start. On the first climb I didn't feel really good. On the summit I couldn't close a small gap and I wasn't recovered at the foot of Col d'Agnes.

On that 2nd climb I felt better and I was able to rejoin the favorites group with the yellow jersey. The descent was fast and some gaps occurred. I had to close some before the war started on Mur de Péguère. Over there my legs felt better again and I was able to pass some riders. I reached the summit in the company of Latour. We were able to return in a group in Foix and sprint for the 13th spot."
