Dauphiné (Stage 8) - 2 riders top 20 in final GC

In the final stage of Critérium du Dauphiné (2.WT, 04-11/06) the riders had to conquer four tough climbs with the summit finish on Plateau de Solaison.

The race exploded on the first climb. Danish rider Jakob Fuglsang won the stage and the final GC. After strong performances in the past mountain stages Guillaume Martin today had a more difficult day. With the help of Thomas Degand he still managed to finish 24th, just behind Degand (23rd). In the GC Martin even advances one spot and thus finishes 18th. Also Degand advances to 20th place. Thus Wanty-Groupe Gobert finishes with 2 riders in top 20 of the final GC of Dauphiné. The team ends the tough 8 day stage race with all 8 starters. A nice conclusion with an eye on the upcoming Tour de France.

Guillaume Martin:

“I am a little disappointed after today’s stage. This morning I still looked ahead for the GC. There was no fun in today’s stage. I wasn’t in front at the foot of Col des Saisies and had to close some gaps to stay with the favorites. I payed for that because I had to let go with 3 of 4 kilometers before the summit. I was in the company of some BMC riders and Thomas Degand and still thought we could return. If I was in front on the summit, the race would have been different. Now I had to go full gas on the first climb and I payed for those efforts.”

“I didn’t have the same feeling as the last days. The week still was positive. Shame that we ended it with a false note. I will remember the stages on Friday and Saturday to build towards Le Tour. It is weird that I gain a place in the GC today, while my results were better the previous days. Now I leave for a 10 day altitude camp on Lautaret. I will recon some Alpes mountain stages, with finishes on Isoard and Serre-Chevalier. After that I will ride French Championships and Le Tour.”
