A first victory for Baugnies

The GP José Dubois was on the agenda of our team Wanty-Gobert. A selection of thirteen riders was present at the only kermesse in Wallonia of the season, co-organized by our general manager Jean-François Bourlart, in Isières (Ath). The race, which was ridden in a scorching heat, smiled soon to coureageous riders. The first attacks of the day were recompensated, because the good breakaway was initially composed of twenty riders, among whom four Wanty-Gobert representants. Vliegen, Vanspeybrouck, Van Melsen and Baugnies were part of a first group, to which Aimé De Gendt was added later. The leading group was reduced during the 160 kilometer race, before a trio under the lead of Jérôme Baugnies escaped during the penultimate lap. The Belgian rider won with a very small advantage in a sprint with three, ahead of Jonas Rickaert and Ylber Sefa. It is the first victory of a Wanty-Gobert representative in this race on home soil.

Jérôme Baugnies :

«It is never easy to race this Grand Prix José Dubois, because our competitors always keep an eye on us. The day was very exhausting, with a suffocating heat and a strong wind. We were always well represented at the front, and we worked well as a team. I felt good in the final and we managed to escape with three. I was afraid of the sprint speed of Rickaert, and finally it was very close. I'm very happy to win this race, on home soil for the team, before I already missed out on this victory.»

«This is excellent for my confidence ahead of the Tour of Luxembourg. I struggled during the first part of the season, after the death of my grandfather last winter. He was my trainer and my mentor, so it was very hard to deal with this loss. But the team always granted me their confidence, even during the most difficult moments. The best is yet to come, because my form is going crescendo.»
